William Powell Frith R.A

Perhaps the best and certainly the most famous Victorian painter of historical genre and contemporary scenes, William Powell Frith was Queen Victoria's favorite artist and one of his chief patrons. Frith studied at Sass's Academy and the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1845 and an Academician in 1852. His early subjects were historical and literary scenes taken from Shakespeare, Scott, Dickens and the like, and was then inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites to illustrate contemporary life. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the British Institute for over 60 years from 1840 to 1902. Many of his works are in the Royal Collection.
