James Lynwood Palmer

Born in Lincolnshire, England, Palmer ran away to Canada at a young age. There he was in charge of the horses in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Palmer then became a self-trained artist and earned a living as such in New York until he returned to England in 1899. There he secured commissions to paint horses of famous patrons, including the Duke of Portland, Edward VII and George V. Later Palmer became adviser to the Earl of Derby's stud. It is said that he trained a Grand National winner.
