Richard Ansdell R.A.

Richard Ansdell, R.A., a well-known British artist, was born May 11, 1815, in Liverpool and died April 20, 1885 in Farnborough. He was a painter of hunting scenes, genre and landscapes. He was also an engraver. Ansdell, an impoverished orphan, was a student at the Bleu Coat School in Liverpool. At the age of 20, Ansdell established his career as a full-fledged artist. In 1840, he debuted at the Royal Academy and continued to exhibit there through 1847. Ansdell became very popular through the circulation of engravings of his works. He initially visited Spain in the company of John Phillip and his travels there had a major impact on his works. During the last 25 years of his life, he sold over 180 paintings for more than 3,000,000 francs and exhibited over 149 canvases at the Royal Academy. Ansdell's works can be seen in museums in Bristol, Hamburg, Liverpool and Sunderland.
