Thomas Edward Roberts

Roberts was a London painter of genre, portraits and historical subjects. He exhibited from 1850 – 1901 at the Royal Academy from 1851-1901, The Society of Artists 127 Works and elsewhere. Titles at the Royal Academy, include ‘He Loves Me – He Loves Me Not’, 1851 and ‘Basking – a Corner in the Alhambra’, 1884. In 1859 Roberts exhibited ‘The opinion of the Press’ No 173 at The Society of Artists, a painting showing a young artist much discouraged by a bad review. Ruskin noted it saying “The two works are interesting…for their fidelity of light and shade. The sentiment of No. 173 is well and graphically expressed to warn young painters against attaching too much importance to press criticism as an influence on their fortune” It led him to a sermon on “Do your work well and kindly, and no enemy can harm you”.
