Sir Alfred East
Sir Alfred East was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. Working in his brother's shoe factory, he attended evening classes at the Government Art School in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1880 he went on to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julian in Paris. He was greatly influenced by the Barbizon painters and then returned to settle in London in 1884. He exhibited at the Royal Academy for 30 years. He was knighted in 1910. East is best remembered as a vivid landscape painter, working with broad masses on a large scale.
