Giovanni Costa

Giovanni Costa was an Italian academic painter who was born in Rome in 1826 and studied under Francesco Podesti and Francesco Coghetti at the Accademia de S. Luca, Rome. Costa visited London and through Leighton was introduced to the Pre-Raphaelites, reinforcing the move towards romanticism in his paintings. In 1870 he was elected Professore de Pittura at the Accademia de Belle Arti in Florence. From 1877 he exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in London with a group of Italian and English painters who were to be the founder members of the Etruscan school in Rome.
